Smokey comes of age : Unmanned aerial systems for fire suppression and ignition

چکیده
For the last century, fire management has focused on techniques to both protect human communities from catastrophic wildfire and to maintain fire-dependent ecological systems. However, despite a large and increasing allocation of resources and personnel to these goals, we are losing ground. It is clear that current fire management techniques are no match for the challenges requested of fire managers, and new technological innovations are needed. To meet this need, we introduce and describe an Unmanned Aerial System for Fire Fighting and Ignition (UAS-FFI) as part of a broader call for new innovations and technologies that can help advance fire management. We have developed a UAS-FFI prototype that can precisely ignite fires as part of wildfire suppression tactics or fire prescriptions, replacing higher risk approaches that require humans to be placed at close proximity to flaming fire fronts.

Decision Support System for Hot Spot Detection
Forest fires are an important problem for many countries. Prevention, surveillance and extinguishing tasks are costly and sometimes risky. This paper focuses on the surveillance of the fire embers once the fire is extinguished. This is a post-fire task which requires an important amount of terrestrial resources, especially if the weather conditions may provoke the re-ignition of the fire. We pr...
متن کاملA micro-UAS to Start Prescribed Fires
Prescribed fires have many benefits, but existing ignition methods are dangerous, costly, or inefficient. This paper presents the design and evaluation of a micro-UAS that can start a prescribed fire from the air, while being operated from a safe distance and without the costs associated with aerial ignition from a manned aircraft. We evaluate the performance of the system in extensive controll...
متن کاملAutomatic Forest-Fire Measuring Using Ground Stations and Unmanned Aerial Systems
This paper presents a novel system for automatic forest-fire measurement using cameras distributed at ground stations and mounted on Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). It can obtain geometrical measurements of forest fires in real-time such as the location and shape of the fire front, flame height and rate of spread, among others. Measurement of forest fires is a challenging problem that is affecte...
متن کاملAn Unmanned Aircraft System for Automatic Forest Fire Monitoring and Measurement
The paper presents an Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS), consisting of several aerial vehicles and a central station, for forest fire monitoring. Fire monitoring is defined as the computation in real-time of the evolution of the fire front shape and potentially other parameters related to the fire propagation, and is very important for forest fire fighting. The paper shows how an UAS can automatic...
